Why We Keep Poultry

Why We Keep Poultry

Often times, we get caught up in the stresses of everyday life, we have 1,000 things we would love to do but time for very few. Our hobbies frequently take a back seat as more important issues arise, leaving them neglected or not offering the level of enjoyment to us that we would like.

The great thing about keeping poultry is that they constantly bring us back, whether in need of feed or water they remind us of our passion, forcing us to spend the time to take care of them whether we have it or not.

But occasionally this is where it stops, the bare minimum, as we remember everything else we have to do. So in our increasingly busy lives, we must find the time to spend with the things we love or make the time spent more enjoyable.

This is where developing systems to reduce the unpleasant factors of keeping birds is crucial. It's no secret that most of us would rather watch them forage in a lush garden over cleaning out their coop. But luckily, there are various elements we can put in place to reduce these negatives.

For instance, we can use a deep bedding system, which involves  adding more material to the floor of your coop which can then be used as a compost for gardens. This reduces the amount of times in a year that you have to clean out your coop.

Similarly, we can use automatic waterers and feeders that do not require cleaning and for the waterers, can be fully automatic. As for the feeders, we can reduce the amount of spilt feed and lower the frequency which they need filling up.

Finally, if you are really in love with keeping chickens you can spend some time making their coop and run more visually pleasing.

Ultimately, keeping chickens is much more of an art than a science, at least for backyard keepers like ourselves, so it is important that we keep the emotion in keeping chickens and keep our passion alive.

I hope this blog has been helpful to you. Currently i am running a "value deals" initiative which aims at making poultry keeping more accessible to more people so our hobby can continue to grow in our communities. Therefore the products in the "value deals" collection are very useful but also very cheap. The link is HERE
